Interculturel and SF

A world inside a word

Hi All, sometimes in intercultural group similar sound-words can create confusion and misunderstanding.
To pretend in english have a really different meaning than Italian, and also a lot of words or phrases.
For example "Accogliere" (IT) is traslated as Accept. But Accogliere is by heart and not by mind. So maybe welcome can be better. In german maybe is "Annehmen" and so on...
A word is one world. How can we help each other to create a intercultural dictionary?

Which are, according to you the…

differences in language

I am wondering if you have any experiences with translating SF questions - how much do you respect cultural differences eg direct/indirect communication?

Let me give you an example:

Swiss German: wenn Sie Ihr Ziel erreichen würden, was wäre anders?
German: Wenn Sie Ihr Ziel erreicht haben, was ist anders? --> using the conjungtive case.

US-English: if you reach/realise your goal, what's different? --> using the present tense.

Any experiences dear interculturalists?

Inter-Cultural Invitations

I was wondering if, when & how this group discussion will be formed. It seems to me that this specific group, more than any other group, can explore the relation between SF and intercultural settings & processes within itself - as a reflection of an emerging intercultural group.

Could we accept it as a Platform?

Hi Kati, hi All, there is quite a silence following my question - not sure if my question was too trivial or if this means so far no books of this kind have been found...Then we should start discussing about writing one, seriously!
I have ordered a book with a promising title, so let´s wait and be surprised, what`s in it ; )
