Mark--this might be off topic but was sad to read your post about George--I actually saw his shodan exam when he was in his early 50's and I was a young blue belt in my mid 30's. Thought his test was okay for an old guy. I dropped out of…

Paolo I am lucky to have found my way to this site. Knowing where people have blogs is way beyond my capabilities. Maybe if a Miracle happened the first thing I would notice is I would be typing in an internet address and there would be your…

The miracle question isn't a tool for visualization. It's a conversational device that guides the client/coachee to begin imagining the signs of change which provide a foundation for conversations about times some of these happenings have…

Meant to say all those SF practices and principles dovetail nicely with emotional intelligence--coaches need EI and so do leaders. And it seems to me that those of us who hold the assumptions of SF and listen for strengths and resources which can be…

I have been reading Dan Goleman's Primal Leadership (not to be confused with Primal Scream of the early 1970's in California's crazy therapies). And I see how SFC and Emotional Intelligence compliment each other. I can see how SF…

While I am firmly rooted in the SF coaching camp I am always open to interesting approaches to working more purposefully with people's conceptual/assumption blocks--noetic filters that limit how they see and what they think is possible. This is an interesting book with interesting ideas about ways of working that other side of the solution/problem as a both/and rather than either/or approach to helping people bring about desired change. Guess I am a solution focused therapist always open to…See More

Hannes--I have enough trouble trying to change myself--thinking I can change someone else is crazy thinking and a prescription for burn-out, starting to label clients who aren't changing the way we think they should, and feeling ineffective if…

janine--that is an excellent suggestion. There is no reason I need to label what I do SF. In the presentation I am going to make this afternoon it's clear to me that my goal is to simply share how I work--and to give then a case example. I…

Well Jenny I get your point. And yes resistance is dead. But unfortunately olds ways die hard.

Jenny its not the union folks I am worried about--the people I am coaching are very happy with what we are doing. I have the task of shaping a coaching model with the current team of professional coaches which we will then teach to the union leaders…

H-P this is so helpful. Here I am at 67 years of age having to learn new things--I know how I work, I have trained therapists interested in learning my approach, but this is the first time I will be showing and teaching my approach to people who…

Mark Mc--Great question. I have asked. My friend--who brought me on board--and who hired all the other psychodynamic coaches--knew my therapy work and always sent couples to me because he thought no one he knew was as effective with couples. So he…

I've mentioned to some on this list that I retired from the practice of therapy about three years ago--my orientation was SFT for the last 10 years or so--wife and I wrote Recreating Partnership: A collaborative, solution-oriented approach to…

In which role(s) do you use SF ideas and tools? (You can pick more than one)
Coach, Consultant, Trainer
What is your connection to Solution Focused Work (based on Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer at BFTC Milwaukee and others)?
I practiced therapy for over 35 years, the last 10 as an SF practitioner. My wife and I wrote Recreating Partnership: A Collaborative, Solution-Oriented Approach to Couples Therapy. I retired from therapy practice but now am part of a consulting team that provides OD, strategic planning and coaching to a large and growing American labor union.

I retired from doing SF Therapy and was enjoying all the free time when suddenly I was hooked into joining a consulting team doing OD, leadership and staff training and development and coaching for a large US labor union. I started out doing some coaching and next thing I knew I am directing the coaching program--recruiting, training and supervising the coaches. And assisting at the development and training programs around the country. So much for retirement. And I am working hard to translate my SF therapy experience and skills into the organization and executive coaching field.
